Lauch of The Aphrodysial

We’re delighted to invite you to the online launch of our 2022 annual volume  on Saturday 25 February at 2pm GMT!

The Malone Society and Reading Early Plays will be hosting an online reading of William Percy’s The Aphrodysial to mark the launch of Maria Shmygol‘s new edition of the play.

At the undersea court of King Oceanus, preparations are under way for the annual sea-feast to be attended by the goddess of love. Interlopers from above the surface bring romantic complications with them, some of which will be resolved with the help of a seemingly prophetic whale.

William Percy wrote this strange fantasy in 1602, intending it for production by both the Children of Paul’s and an unnamed adult company. The publication of Maria Shmygol’s edition for the Malone Society now makes the play widely accessible for the first time, and, by way of a launch, Reading Early Plays will be offering a reading of the play followed by a Q&A session with Maria and the Malone Society’s events organiser, José A. Pérez Díez.

You can book your place by clicking here. The price of the ticket is £3, which will go to support the work of the Malone Society. If you would like to read a role in the play, please get in touch with Héloïse Sénéchal (heloise.senechal.rep@gmail.com) by the previous Sunday, 19 February.
