Elizabeth Brennan Annual Essay Prize

The Malone Society invites nominations from its members for the Elizabeth Brennan Annual Essay Prize 2026 for the best new scholarly journal article focused on the textual and/or historical scholarship of drama in English before 1642, in the islands of Great Britain and Ireland and overseas British institutions.

The Prize is offered in memory of Elizabeth Brennan, a dedicated member of Council for many years, and a generous supporter of the Society.

Eligible articles must be published in an online or print journal during the preceding calendar year (i.e. between January and December 2025). Online ‘publication’ includes pre-prints or articles that have been accepted and edited for publication but have not yet been gathered into an issue of a journal.

Society members may not nominate their own work.

Nominators are asked to complete a short nomination form, accompanied by a copy of the article, via this link. The deadline for nominations is 23 April 2026.

Nominations will be reviewed and judged by the Society’s Awards and Grants panel.

Prize Value: £250

The winner of the prize will also receive a year’s membership of the Malone Society and will be given the opportunity to select five free books from the Society’s eligible back-catalogue.
